Throughout the game's story, there are multiple characters who have no Persona power of their own but appear in the Metaverse in their copyright Thief forms and join the battles. These characters are cognitive manifestations created by Merope in accordance with the following conditions:
Atsushi Takayama: Target from Yumi Shiina's Synergy stories. A man who once kept harassing Yumi with unreasonably harsh comments on her dancing performance, which eventually caused her to quit dancing. He finds the bar where Yumi is currently working at and continues his harassment.
As he boards the train, he notices the Metaverse Navigator appear on his phone and the owl from before begins speaking to him. As the protagonist taps the app on his phone, he enters the Metaverse and the owl introduces himself as Lufel. After a scuffle with Shadows, the protagonist awakens his persona and the two fight their way out of Mementos.
Lufel explains that humanity's hopes and desires are being stolen, including Nagisa's. While attempting to leave the Metaverse, the pair are attacked by Shadows, creatures formed from warped desires who attack humans on sight. Nagisa awakens his Persona, Jápelošík, and is able to defeat the shadows with Lufel's help, allowing them to return to the real world.
The game begins in a similar vein to how Persona 5 begins, midway through the infiltration at Niijima's Palace. However, when Joker begins to make his escape, a hooded intruder intervenes and attacks him.
There are certain side characters that have quests to complete. Beating said side quests unlocks interactions with Daily Life.
When it comes to the overworld, very few things have seen changes. Many of the locations (such as Shibuya and Yongen-Jaya) resemble their original game counterparts and activities (like batting and fishing) are also unchanged. However, there are some new locations to visit, such as Zoshigaya, and some new activities like playing music or soccer. There is also a gachapon (and as of Update 3.0.2 a claw game) the protagonist can play and try to get rewards that can be used to decorate the Persona 5 The copyright X protagonist’s house.
They also appear within the CrossFate storyline where it is revealed they exist in a parallel world to the protagonist's group of copyright Thieves.

Perfect World Games first teased the project with a trailer in April 2021. Titled Code Name: X, it was claimed to be the first mobile entry in a “famous Japanese console game series” that has sold over 10 million copies worldwide.
Most of these targets tend to have their crimes heavily watered down compared to those from the original Persona 5, with crimes mostly arranging from public indecency or financial extortion.
Not to mention moving around on mobile is clunky - I save all palace/mementos exploration for PC where I know the controls are more reliable... I really hope this game doesn't die within a year, but it seems like it will at this rate.

To accommodate the format of a free-to-play game created primarily for mobile devices, Persona 5: The copyright X adapts the Persona mechanics with various changes.
